soul mates

His once booming laugh, a cackle.
His fit military stiffness, a belly bursting buttons
one hand clutches a wine bottle, the other a half-empty glass.
He nods to sleep, a sick, old animal, mean yet loyal.

I sit still as an unrippled lake,
the only living thing is my pen
scratching black words on stark white.

"Multiple clusters of atypical epithelial cells
that have enlarged pleomorphic round nuclei —
granular basophilic cytoplasm —
The source is possibly from the brain."

Black and white drowns autumn's yellows, oranges.
All is decay.

And I am numb for a man
who beat me, ground me as a child,
a man I hate and love.
