Red (Cont'd): Are you a retard? NOTE: If the same character is continuing to talk while the others are silent after you have inserted some action the you write the character's name for the next line of dialogue, bracket Cont'd and proceed. E.G Don (Cont'd): Knock it off!

This Here`s for Dads, Even if You Felt Like You Never Had One.

[the stage is dark and there is a spotlight on one man standing. He is wearing a black suit. He begins walking forward. As he walks ahead, two other men walk from the right and from the left towards each other. The man on the left is wearing a red suit and the man on the right is wearing a white suit. They keep walking until they meet the man in the black suit. They begin walking sideways along with him. He then stops.]

Black:
Ummm, what?

[they all three look at each other]

Black:
Who are you people? 1 comment

Red:
Don’t you know?

[Black shakes his head.]

Red:
Don’t you get it? 1 comment

[Black shakes his head again.]

Red:
Are you a retard? 1 comment

Black:
HEY…

White:
Wait, let me explain it to him.

Red:
Why do you think we’re dressed like this?

[Black looks at both their faces again]

Black:
Umm..uhh..you like disco..?

[Red slaps Black’s head.]

White:
We’re your conscience. I’m the positive, he’s the negative.

Red:
He’s the wrong, I’m the right.

Black:
Oh..so you people are inside my head?

White:
Not exactly...

[pause]

Black:
So this is all real?

White:
Oh, this is all real. But we are inside your head.

Black:
So I’m hallucinating?

White:
No.

Black:
So this is real.

White:
Not really, no.

Black:
Am I dead?

Red:
I wish you were.

White:
Look. We’re here to help you out. Well, I’m here to help you out. We’ve always been there for you, your good decisions and bad. But what you’re about to do is massive and we thought it is better to have a proper conversation about it.

[Black looks back and forth again.]

Black:
So?

White:
Oh. Yes. Well, as the sole handler of all the positivity within you, I say you shouldn’t.

Black:
And you?

Red:
Yes, obviously. If we were agreeing on something, we’d not be here.

Black:
Oh...

[pause]

White:
Don’t you feel any guilt whatsoever? You’re asking a man to give up his life! His soul! His essence! His...life! God has been kind enough to gift it to him, the greatest of all gifts and you’re asking him to give it away? Just like that? With a snap of your rotten fingers? All his memories, a lifetime of them, all vanish into thin air? All those who loved him, who still love him, what about them? You expect them to live through such a loss? For once, ONCE, can’t you be a little sensitive?

[long pause]

Red:
Where was I? Yes, kill yourself. You have no hope in life.

Black:
That’s real encouraging..

White:
Look, son. Tell me. What’s wrong? Suicide is quite a serious step to take.

Black:
See, it’s like...wait. Aren’t you supposed to be looking like me?

Red:
What do you mean?

Black:
You know, like on my shoulders, you with a harp and you with a trident..

[pause]

Red:
First of all, you’re ugly. If I looked like you, I’d puke on my face. Second, this isn’t Looney fucking Toons.

White:
Hey, there’s no need for uncivilized language here!

Red:
I’ll say whatever the hell I want!

Black:
Some conscience I have..

White:
I apologise. It was a rare lapse in composure. We’re adults. Let’s discuss like we are.

Red:
Yeah, let’s get this over with. I have a hot date.

White:
Really? With who?

Red:
Oh, there’s..

Black:
SEE, THIS IS WHY I WANT TO KILL MYSELF!

[they both turn towards Black.]

Black:
I have no importance. I hold no significance anywhere. My opinion is treated like shit and my work is either credited to somebody else or just chosen to be ignored.

[pauses and takes a deep breath]

Black:
I was fired yesterday. For no fault of mine. They said I didn’t work enough. I didn’t work the ‘required amount’. I did. I know I did. People just don’t like it when others begin to get ahead.

[another pause and deep breath]

Black:
To make things worse, my girlfriend left me. I loved her so much. I really believed she was the one. I guess I just wasn’t good enough...

[White walks towards Black and puts his arm on his shoulder]

Black:
I went out today. I roamed around the streets. I didn’t know what to do. There’s so much competitiveness, it’s scary. Sometimes I think God just wants to screw with us. He’s given me everything. He just hasn’t...given me anything. 1 comment

White:
So, this is you giving up?

Black:
Yes. This is me giving up. On everything. I don’t want to. I don’t give up easy. But, there comes a time when everything just seems impossible to get..

[long silence]

White:
George Washington once said, “its better to give no excuse than a bad one”. And you’ve given the worst kind of excuse.

Red:
Wait. He also said “four score and seven years ago”, and that doesn’t make any sense.

White:
That was Lincoln.

[pause]

Red:
Oh. Continue.

White:
You can’t give up. You’re young and talented. Success will eventually come to you. There are ups and downs, that’s what life is all about. Those who battle it out become the winners. You have the ability in you and you know that. It’s just a matter of time before you tap it and everything falls exactly where you want it to.

[Black looks at White and begins to smile]

Red:
*ahem* My turn.
I represent a real side of you. A side you don’t prefer, but a side you know is always correct. I’m brutally honest and I will never sugar coat anything. I am the truth. I am practical. I am what you should be. I am what the world expects of you, but I’m also the one who society suppresses. What he says is all a matter of an ‘if’, while what I say directly affects what you do. I don’t gaze into the future and hope for a better time. I look at my current state and tell you how you will be in five years time. I don’t fuck around. I tell you what’s right. And, I can do this.. 1 comment

[begins dancing to ‘Billie Jean’ by Michael Jackson] 1 comment

[White and Black look at him dance. The music stops. Red stops at a freeze frame. Black looks at White]

Black:
He’s got a point.

[Red gets back to his standing position]

White:
What? No! Don’t you see? ‘Hope’ is the greatest feeling one can get. It’s that feeling that will drive you forward!

Red:
Oh, so you’re asking him to live on ‘hope’? Why don’t you ask him to imagine cornflakes instead of having breakfast, then?

White:
You’re not getting it! This guy can actually do something! [looks at Black] Look, you have brilliance within you. It’s just that it’s taking it’s time to reveal itself to the Universe. If you do this, the past will all be wasted, EVERYTHING you’ve done and want to do will all be a waste!

Red:
He hasn’t done anything!

Black:
But what makes you say I can’t?

[White begins to smile]

Black:
He’s right! I have something in me. I know I do. And I’m going to go out there and find it!

[Black walks out right while Red and White watch him leave. Then we hear a car crash]

[silence]

Red:
Well. At least you tried.

End.
