For Charlie

In the darkness of despair, the lost cry out.
Ones who should not be- but are.
Unwashed,unkempted shadows of the past,
struggling in the present,
yearning to reach the future.
Long forgotten to the world of light,
they hide in the cracks; hoping for the
salvation that is always a mere fraction
away from fruition.
As they beseech their brethren, they are
shunned as unworthy, unwanted, undeserving.
Pity them all, especially the small ones,
who do not understand why their world
is such as this.
Not knowing any life but one of
constantly moving from drab to dreariness.
Pray for these phantoms who desire
only to belong, to reconnect,
be accepted in the family of mankind, again.
Alas, they will never be allowed.
The underworld never releases its damned.
