soul mates

By waters blue she sings her tune on banks of river near,
A lonely melody it is that breaks the heart of all who hear.
It echoes through the valley in the evening and the dawn,
So sweet and lovely is her voice upon tomorrow morn.

She waits for her beloved, who had left so long ago,
In midwinter a decade past before the driving snows.
He ventured on a journey then to find her source of sorrow,
But before he left her singing there he promised he’d return tomorrow.

She patient waits each dawn and dusk her eyes on distant hills,
Where she expects his soon return upon her soulful shrills.
The creatures of the valley watch at sunset and at dawn,
They too await his imminence upon each perch and rock and lawn.

By waters clear she sings her song on banks of quiet stream,
And falls asleep beneath the pines so happy there to dream.
Until the day when her love comes she’ll keep her vigil here,
Or else on that unhappy day when all her hope has gone,
And with it her sweet melody forever disappears.
