The heart of the matter

I spent a long time where I distanced myself from my writing, and then the other day I took up my pen again, and found the same joy that I had always felt, when writing prose or poetry. And then this thought came to mind. It may be simple, but I thought I'd share it with the writing community here at Scribeslice, because it's been a huge part of my development as a writer, and I thank each and everyone of it's members that encouraged me and gave me feedback on any one of my pieces.

What is it about writing that we love so much? What is it about the written word; that makes us want so badly to capture everything we experience with it? It is a passion like no other for me, but sometimes when I pull myself away, far enough to see outside myself, and look at my writing from afar, I wonder; what is it that really compels us to write?

For me, putting verses into place is an absolute joy. Writing an essay so it forms a shape in my mind is perfection. Rounding my syllables to fit a theme, makes me feel like I'm completing a jigsaw puzzle. I often feel like an artist when I write, because I concentrate so much on form and flow. I think writing, in it's own way, is a form of magic. It's a force from deep inside ourselves that we can shape, strengthen, and perfect. But most of all; feel.

I may have just answered my own question perhaps, but I really want to hear everyone's opinion on this little thought of mine. :)

Thoughts anyone?

Writing is therapy for me. When a good cry doesn't make me stronger, the words just spill forth and I must write. Usually the words or thoughts are random and then slowly as I write them down , new ideas or thoughts come and they magically come together into one cohesive piece.

Yes, writing is wonderful therapy. And I find the same with my writing, the thoughts seem to magically come together somehow. And then it truly is a thing of beauty to read again and again. Thanks Cindy :)

I agree. It is very gratifying to read a piece I have written and find that I enjoy my own words.

It's good to hear you have started writing again. For a writer, their words are their only real tool to express themselves properly. Writing heals and helps you clarify your thoughts as you read them back to yourself.

You write very well. Good to have you on Scribeslice. :)

@Cindy yes I know the feeling! I almost feel guilty sometimes for enjoying it so much.

@Asma, yes you're right, writing definitely heals and clarifies. Thank you Asma, it feels great to be a part of Scribeslice! :)

Hey Leoni, good to see ya back! :)
When I find the time and TO write (which is about as much time as i have to come on here), its like Cindy said, therapy. In my main work I write for my characters, which I have to apologize to recently, "Sorry for not working on your story guys!!!" LOL

Hey Aaron! Good to hear from you! Glad you stuck around :)

Yes I'm beginning to think that writing is the best therapy for ones soul. And I can totally understand that! Definitely feels like your characters need you to further their stories :)
