soul mates

Dressed to kill,
Ready to juggle red-hot coals,
The fire breather comes forth
Playing with an ember
Between the V of his fingers

Bringing it to his lips,
He sucks with satisfaction,
And shelters the smoke
In the deep, moist recesses
Of his sooty lungs

Breathing out the smoke
He flicks the first cigarette,
Then starts a second from it
Each ember glows
“Till death do us part,” he wheezes
